In Confrontation v2 Adventure Mode Incarnation, at the end of the "acts" of various Scenario Cards there were elite champions called Shadows, that were the nemesis of the Adventurer (Hero). The elixir is the object of the quest, an artifact or ability, held by the Shadow. The Shadows are oftentimes very powerful, unique beings that are difficult encounters even for an adventurer that has seen battle many times over.
Shadows were banned from use in tournament play by Confrontation v3.
